46: Discovering New Worlds

Don Holmes is originally from Progress, Mississippi. Prior to entering the University of Southern Mississippi where he earned a BA in English (Magna Cum Laude), Don enlisted in the United States Army. He served six years as a Military Police officer and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 09-11. 

Currently, Don is a PhD student in English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His scholarly focus is on early African American literature. His dissertation will explore how early black writers and thinkers like Phillis Wheatley and Venture Smith ingratiate themselves into public, white-dominated spaces. 

At Carolina, Don teaches English composition and will teach an American literature course in Spring 2019. Don has also taught two summer sessions of English Composition at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina.
